The University of Ioannina (PANEPISTIMIO IOANNINON, UOI, www.uoi.gr) is a public university that was established in 1970. Today is one the leading universities of Greece and among the 601–800th universities of the world (2021, Times Higher Education World University Rankings).
The Department of Agriculture (https://www.uoi.gr/ekpaideysi/sxoles-kai-tmimata/tmima-geoponias/) is located at the University Campus of Arta at the centre of the major agricultural plain of the Region of Epirus. The mission of the department is to provide high quality tertiary and post graduate education in the fields of crop and animal science. The department has a staff of 30 permanent employees and adequate infrastructure (laboratories, greenhouses, open field experimental setups etc.).
The department contributes to the development of new knowledge on both basic and applied research levels funded by regional national and international R&D programmes. During the last decade, research teams of the Department participated in 5 FP7, 3 H2020 and 20 Interreg projects, and it has broad links with agricultural and environmental stakeholders as it acts as consultant of local authorities on agricultural and environmental topics and is an official stakeholder regarding regional water policies. For the administrative management of the projects the department is supported by the Special Account for Research Funds of the University of Ioannina.
